Daniel 11:1

11:1 And in the first year of Darius the Mede, I ¹  stood to strengthen him and to provide protection for him.)

Daniel 12:1

12:1 “At that time Michael,

the great prince who watches over your people, ² 

will arise. ³ 

There will be a time of distress

unlike any other from the nation’s beginning ⁴ 

up to that time.

But at that time your own people,

all those whose names are ⁵  found written in the book,

will escape.

[11:1]  ¹ sn The antecedent of the pronoun “I” is the angel, not Daniel. The traditional chapter division at this point, and the presence of a chronological note in the verse similar to ones used elsewhere in the book to position Daniel’s activities in relation to imperial affairs, sometimes lead to confusion on this matter.

[12:1]  ² tn Heb “stands over the sons of your people.”

[12:1]  ³ tn Heb “will stand up.”

[12:1]  ⁴ tn Or “from the beginning of a nation.”

[12:1]  ⁵ tn The words “whose names are” are added in the translation for stylistic reasons and for clarification.
